BADAJOZ FINE ARTS MUSEUM
THE BUILDING AND ITS COLLECTIONS
The Fine Arts Museum's collections were made possible by the financial support offered by the provincial government (Diputación de Badajoz), which funded local artists beginning in the last quarter of the 19th century, for which it was compensated with the sending of works by funded artists and donations made by them to the institution, under whose auspices they were able to train in other cities.
In August of 1919 the Museum was founded, opening its doors in January of 1920, with a total of 58 works.
Today the Museum is an institution boasting nearly a century of history, renowned above all for its collection dedicated to Extremaduran plastic arts, with more than 2000 pieces. Its historic holdings, declared a Historical-Artistic Monument in 1962 for their outstanding interest and because they constitute a set of cultural works of indisputable value, today comprise a valuable and essential treasure of regional and national cultural heritage.
Ortega Muñoz, Ángel Duarte Timoteo Pérez Rubio, Isaías Diáz, Adelardo Covarsí, Antonio Juez, Eugenio Hermoso, Pérez-Jiménez, Torre-Isunza, Aurelio Cabrera, Bermuda Mateos, Felipe Checa, Nicolás Megía, Francisco de Zurburán and Luis de Morales are some of the Extremaduran artists featured in the collection.
The Museum also contains the work of prestigious Spanish artists including José Nogué, Oroz Lacalle, Sorolla, Gutiérrrez Solana, Mongrell, Paternina, Ramírez Ibánez, Álvarez Dumont and Eduardo Rosales, whose presence enhances the collection.
Following the latest expansion of the building, inaugurated in 2015, the collection is organized based on a new innovative and renovated expository discourse offering a new reading. The new route allows the visitor to travel back to the past thanks to a plastic and expository discourse beginning with pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries, and concluding with the oldest ones, dating from the 16th.
The MUBA architectural complex features a large interior patio communicating with the museum's buildings: Building A (Permanent collection, Centuries 19-21. Painting and Sculpture, Building B (Permanent collection. Religious Painting. Royal Portraits and Historical Paintings) and Building C (Temporary Exhibitions, Specialized Library, and Multi-purpose Room).
